Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #9: DarthIgorMortis

| January 23, 2013

Many have their own reasons for induling in virtual Steampunk worlds, for stories, interaction, and of course, photography.  As odd as it might seem (at least to those who have not had the opportunity to experiment with SL photography), it can be a challenge, but a boon to those wishing to tell stories and provide illustrations of unique worlds (such as Steampunk).  Mr. DarthIgorMortis, is a prime example of a gentleman with such a talent and eye for composition.

Working for the most part with SL compositions, he has created some intriguing and thematically dynamic works using a combination of excellent topic choice, along with photoshop skills to portray an aged look to his work.  Though he has a good number of Steampunk images, I am partial to those with a nautical theme, so it seemed appropriate to add a few said works on the Tribune.

His work certainly conveys a rough-hewn atmosphere of Steampunk, and to see more of his works, please do consider a visit to his Deviant Art page, located at: http://darthigormortis.deviantart.com/

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #8: Airship Cutaway

| January 17, 2013

Exploded views of ship interiors were part of my existence once upon a time, while qualifying for my “fish” at sea, so to see a nicely done view of the interior of a large airship was quite a treat!  Lots going on, but for easy viewing – especially the nice details (one just has to look closely).  Mr. Monkey-Paw displays superlative artistic talents, so please do consider a visit to his Deviant Art page, which includes numerous additional Steampunk influenced artwork (and perhaps a Steampunk-related world-background, but alas nothing to support this theory).  It is all located at: http://monkey-paw.deviantart.com/

Steampunk Masterworks: Mr. V. Voitekhovitch

| January 12, 2013

There are many exceptional artists who produce amazing artistic works, set on display at Deviant Art.  However, on occasion one finds work that is frankly astounding, that word has to be passed on its exquisite quality.  One such artist is Mr. Vadim Voitekhovitch (who also uses the DA nom-de-plum of “~voitv”), and his beautiful collection of Steampunk themed works!
Mr. Voitekhovitch has two unique aspects that stand out in my mind (or shall I say view)?  First, many modern Steampunk artworks tend to use modern forms (e.g. photography, artistic software, etc…) to provide illustrations regarding the genre, which is quite understandable, given that Steampunk is a speculative fiction needing unique perspectives to represent it.  However, Mr. Voitekhovitch uses oils, which aside from providing a genre-accurate style, it also provides a warmth and simpleness to his many complex works.

Additionally, while one easily sees the direct and indirect hallmarks of Steampunk (e.g. the direct being the vehicles and technology, especially his airships, while the indirect being the “aging” of his vehicles), a good number of works focus on the less obvious topics in the work, such as the posted piece, High Society News, showing two ladies in discourse, while airships and four-wheeled vehicles pass by, noticed, but un-noticed aspects of daily life… in a Steampunk world. But enough of my pseudo-artistic prattling! To see more of his outstanding work, please do visit his Deviant Art page, located at: http://voitv.deviantart.com/ … or his own webpage, and specifically his Steampunk gallery, (in German, mind you), located at: http://www.kunstnet.de/voit .

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #7: Steampunk Aircaptain Dress

| January 5, 2013

Changing tack on inspiration, I came across this extraordinary work of design for an adventuresome Steampunk airship captain!  Mind you, there is a bit more material involved with this work than as what some other works have portrayed a lady airship captain might don, but I would say the design and appearance is most certainly fitting.  I’ll leave the knowledge of the nuances of design to those who possess more knowledge of the sort (specifically not myself), but an excellent work indeed!  For more examples of Ms. M. Meli’s incredible talent, please do visit her Deviant Art site, located at: http://madmoisellemeli.deviantart.com/ , or one can consider a visit to her online store, located at: http://de.dawanda.com/shop/MADmoiselleMeli

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #5: Sany, the Steampunk Rider

| December 31, 2012

For the last entry of 2012, I figured I’d add one of my more enjoyable and sausy finds from Deviant Art!  Sany, the Steampunk Rider, was completed by Mr. Q. Pointillart, a very talented French artist with amazing skill indeed!  His playful representation of the Steampunk Rider the retro-esque Steampunk look with a playful nonchalance many in the genre display!  To see more of Mr. Pointillart’s work, please do visit his Deviant Art page, located at: http://orbi51.deviantart.com/

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #5: Brassheart

| December 27, 2012

Looking about Deviant Art for vehicle inspiration, I came across Steampunk Ship: Brassheart, an excellent work by Mr. R. Hoff.  The artwork is impeccable, but I do enjoy the small touches which makes the Brassheart standout, such as the liberal use of glass for portholes (specifically the very large display), the unique silhouette of the ship (from the side), and oddly, the fact it is in port, so one not only sees the ship, but gets a small snippet of the world around it.  An excellent work, imo, and do consider visiting his DA location for more excellent artwork, at:  http://industrial-forest.deviantart.com/ - Do enjoy!

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #3: Steampunk Notebook

| December 12, 2012

Although extravagant items are always of note in Steampunk, having small, nuanced items really add a bit of panache to anyone’s decor and/or surroundings.  Small everyday items such as this beautiful Steampunk notebook, made by Mr. Diarment, most certainly add a unique flair to as simple device for keeping one’s ideas.  I would certainly encourage a trip to his Deviant Art locale, where there are a plethora of beautiful items on display, then perhaps a visit to his Esty shop, where one can window/screen shop at the amazing works on display (located here - alas, only two books are available at the moment, but they are quite outstanding).  Finally, the good gentleman has a blog with more of his works on display, located at: http://diarment-creations.blogspot.com/ .

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #2: Steampunk Leaves Spider

| December 9, 2012

Steampunk Leaves Spider, by ~CatherinetteRings
Continuing with the “artistic inspirations”, Catherine Rings caught my eye (so to speak) with its very unique and creative designs of rings, necklaces, and of course, insects (as per above).  Amazing work, and exceptionally creative, so if one has not had the opportunity to view all of Mr. Proux’s work, do consider a trip to his Deviant Art website (located here: http://catherinetterings.deviantart.com/ , and Etsy site, located here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/CatherinetteRings .

Steampunk Artistic Inspiration #1: Steampunk Apocalypse

| December 4, 2012

I do make a point of wandering about Deviant Art, seeing new and unique imagery as intriguing views on Steampunk, such as the above re-imagining of Alphonse Mucha’s Les Saisons (1900), but instead of the four seasons, its the Steampunk version of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

And above is a more attuned work towards the Mucha classic, titled Steampunk Seasons.  Ms. C. Yates, the brilliant artist behind the above pieces, has a number of outstanding Steampunk artistic representations, so if one cares to see more, do visit her Deviant Art location!

Art Nouveau on Deviant Art!

| September 8, 2012

One of the pleasures of Steampunk is its impact on providing a new focus on the classic art genre of the ear, specifically Art Nouveau.  One can easily appreciate the classic works of Mucha, the “godfather” of the graphic Art Nouveau style, but there are many exceptionally talented artists who also work to replicate the style, using both classic and modern takes on Art Nouveau.

An excellent source for new interpretations is located at a small artistic corner of the internet named Deviant Art.  If one follows the provided links (below), there is a cacophony of outstanding work available for viewing.  There are perhaps hundreds (between the two dedicated groups) of stylized work on display (oh, the website are at…
The #artnouveau group is located at: http://artnouveau.deviantart.com/
The #art-nouveau-club group is located at: http://art-nouveau-club.deviantart.com

Cafe au Lait, by *HenarTorinos (#art-nouveau-club)
The groups are civil and encouraging of those wishing to improve their skills in the graphic arts.  In fact, one group actually has an excellent tutorial for those with some Photoshop skills (or like to imagine they have some skill, such as myself – meh)!  One can eye the tutorial right here: http://cassiopeiaart.deviantart.com/art/Art-Nouveau-Tutorial-197750141
There is another option, if one’s artistic skills aren’t quite up to snuff, there is always another option.  Some artists (you’ll have to visit their main pages – those are identified by a “~” or “*” in front of their name/hyperlink), do take commissions, so if you are desiring some personalized work, a bit of searching may very well prove fruitful!  Nonetheless, do pay a visit (with a nice cup of coffee… or Guinness), to the Art Nouveau groups of Deviant art, located at: The #artnouveau group is located at: http://artnouveau.deviantart.com/ , and at http://art-nouveau-club.deviantart.com for the #art-nouveau-club!

Steampunk Fetish #01 – Hat Goggling, by Griffin Leather

| July 4, 2012

To see the term “Steampunk” and “Fetish” in the same phrase tends to catch one’s eye, as they usually don’t meet in common parlance, but took a flyer, and was quite amused at the small production provided by Griffin Leather.  Not only do they produce unique videos, but they are also purveyors of a series of interesting leather products.

I’m not one for leather accouterments, but their Deviant Art page (located at: http://griffinleather.deviantart.com/) has photos of their works, so if you see something unique, you can possibly visit the Etsy store at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/GriffinLeather?ref=seller_info (though the only object listed was a very nice “Plague Doctor” mask).  Still, if intrigued, one could certainly leave a message (at BGandAssoc@yahoo.com)… but for now, do consider viewing the work in the DA catalogue!

Alternate History Steampunk Maps…

| September 20, 2011

Steampunk, interestingly enough, is easily one of the most popular alternate history genres on the market.  By definition a change in technology, leading to changes in political, economic, and a plethora of other things, is not only a great potential for excellent writing (just ask the Steampunk Scholar for a few suggestions), but alternate history maps with a Steampunk view are also unique gems to behold.

I happened upon the artistic cartographer, ~Alt-Reality, a bit ago, who designed some amazing alternate history maps.  A few Steampunk-focused maps exist, but to truly enjoy them do take the link to the lager versions – they are painfully beautiful!  Additionally, there are plenty of other alternate history maps at ~Alt-Reality’s Deviant Art location, (including yet a few more Steampunk maps to indulge in), located at… http://alt-reality.deviantart.com/
