Miskatonic Monday – A Study in Emerald board game

| April 29, 2013

Lights out, everybody.

In this segment of Pocket Change on Miskatonic Mondays, we’re looking at a KickStarter board game based on the Lovecraft-inspired work of Neil Gaiman.

‘A Study in Emerald’ the board game takes as its inspiration the world conjured up by Neil Gaiman in the award winning short story. This is an alternative reality where fiction has become fact. The Old Ones have not only returned but have been ruling the earth for centuries. Opposition is rising, though, as humanity fights between itself to decide its future. Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty are but two figures caught in this struggle.

Martin Wallace has concocted possibly his most subtle, complex, and downright evil design yet. If you know what you’re doing after the third game then you have not understood the rules!

The game takes an original slant on the deck-building mechanic. Instead of buying the cards you want you have to bid for them with influence. The range of cards is massive, with only a few duplicates. You can employ secret agents to carry out your plans, or quietly subvert a city to your control, call up monsters from other dimensions to destroy your enemies, or raise an army of zombies. No two games will ever be the same.

This game will initially only be available via Kickstarter or direct from Treefrog Games, it will not be going into general distribution. We may or may not publish a second edition of the game for general distribution, but if we do the earliest you are likely to see it is 2015.

Miskatonic Monday – Steampunk Cthulhu cards

| March 4, 2013

Lights out, everybody.

On Miskatonic Mondays we celebrate the “weird” fiction of HP Lovecraft and the genre of otherworldly horror it spawned.

I’m starting to think we should call this segment “Pocket Change.” Every time I look at KickStarter, there’s another great artist, or team of artists, pitching a Lovecraft-inspired idea.

Some are excellent. Others, not so much.

Today I bring you a classy set of playing cards by Nat Iwata from Portland, Oregon. From a dream born of Lovecraftian ideals and steampunk aesthetics, I think Nat has really hit the mark with this one.

Here’s the write-up.

Steampunk and Cthulhu have joined forces to grace the surface of a custom deck of poker sized playing cards. Designed by a world famous (ok, maybe not exactly) Steampunk artist and printed by USPCC. This unique combination has led to some kickin’ art. Featured on the back of each card in the deck is the mighty Cthulhu himself at the center, with scenes from the story in the background, all with a Steampunk twist. Court cards will show characters from the story, and possibly the faces of a few generous backers.

Here’s what you’ll get in the deck:

  • Artwork based on a Steampunk rendition of The Call of Cthulhu
  • Beautifully designed and printed card backs
  • Unique court cards with scenes and characters from the story
  • A custom Steampunk Cthulhu tuck box, perfect for tucking

As of Miskatonic Monday, the campaign has accrued $14,000 of its $18,000 goal. With this type of momentum, I think our loyal followers can help Nat cross the finish line before March 17th to make this project a reality.

And how can you say no to this guy?

Miskatonic Monday – Cthulhu: A Puppet Play at The Ornery Theatre

| February 4, 2013

Lights out, everybody.

On Miskatonic Mondays we celebrate the “weird” fiction of HP Lovecraft and the genre of otherworldly horror it spawned.

The Ornery Theatre in Houston, TX will present an original work, Cthulhu: A Puppet Play, at 14 Pews from February 14-18th. Borrowing from Lovecraft’s themes and characters, Cthulhu: A Puppet Play uses puppets, film, and an original score to capture the feeling of impending doom intrinsic to Lovecraft’s works and place it in a modern setting.

The play was conceived and written by Mike and Kelly Switzer of the Ornery Theatre. This production is made possible by a grant from the Houston Arts Alliance, as well as the generous support of Kickstarter funders from across the globe.

The Ornery Theatre was founded by Mike Switzer and is committed to producing work, both new and classic, that would not otherwise be seen on Houston stages. The Ornery Theatre has previously produced the original puppet play Bedtime Stories (Producer’s Pick at the 2011 Houston Fringe Festival), Rough for Theatre I and II by Samuel Beckett, and The Adding Machine by Elmer Rice. Mike’s wife and artistic partner, Kelly Switzer, is an Assistant Professor of Drama at the University of Houston-Downtown and a local scenic and costume designer. Each puppet was handcrafted by Ms. Switzer.

This production has attracted a wide swath of Houston’s most talented artists. Stephanie Saint Sanchez, of the award-winning La Chicana Laundry Pictures, is the director of film. George Heathco composed and will perform an original score that utilizes the Morse Code translation of “Cthulhu is coming” as a thematic base. Local actors, dancers, musicians, and puppeteers involved with the production include: Matthew Carter, Paul Locklear, Kira Vincent, Chris Kemmerer, London Alexander, Luke Hubley, Shanon Adams, Ashley Horn, and Daniel Adame.

Cthulhu: A Puppet Play will run on February 14, 15, 16, and 18 at 8:00pm at 14 Pews. Tickets are $10 and $5 for students with an ID. The production is not suitable for children under 13. For information contact theornerytheatre@gmail.com or visit http://cthulhuapuppetplay.wordpress.com/

Miskatonic Monday – Herbert West: Re-Animator is restored to life on BluRay tomorrow

| September 4, 2012

Lights out, everybody.

On Miskatonic Mondays, we celebrate the “weird” fiction of HP Lovecraft and the genre of otherworldly horror it spawned.

In the States on Tuesday, September 4th, Stuart Gordon’s 1984 classic Re-Animator will be hitting the stores with a newly restored HD BluRay version.

Herbert West (played by Jeffrey Combs) is obsessed with the idea of bringing the dead back to life. Experimenting with a glowing green fluid, he successfully reanimates dead tissue. Unfortunately, the dead are uncontrollable and difficult to subdue. Dr. Carl Hill, West’s instructor, is determined to steal his secret and take all the credit for the discovery. Herbert isn’t willing to give it up so easily, no matter what the consequences are!

Image Entertainment has not specified the disc extras other than to state it will be packed with bonus features (existing from earlier DVD releases), including audio commentaries from the film’s director, producer and cast, interviews, extended scenes, galleries, and more.

Not familiar with Re-Animator?  Check out the Miskatonic Monday archives and catch up.

His works pushed sci-fi and horror into the new millennium and have been the nightmare fuel for countless artists around the globe ever since.  Here’s to you, you deranged xenophobic antisocial momma’s boy.

How are you celebrating this weirdest of holidays?

Miskatonic Monday – Lovecraft pulls a Curwen at the Olympics

| August 6, 2012

Lights out, everybody.

On Miskatonic Mondays, we celebrate the “weird” fiction of HP Lovecraft and the genre of otherworldly horror it spawned.

I’ve been watching the Olympics, and I noticed a certain American of abnormal ability.

He’s very comfortable in the water… and some would dare say he swims like a fish-man.

Upon closer inspection, he’s definitely not from Innsmouth, but he does bare a striking resemblance to someone we all know.

But we all know HP Lovecraft was a willowy and malnourished man in his time.  If he just kept his head down and stuck to New England, I don’t think his secret would have ever garnered suspicion, but it looks like little Howey might have become a little too bold in his years.

Do you doubt my proof?

Read this “work of fiction” and then we can talk.
