The Melancholy Romantic – an outstanding new Steampunk location!

As the last entry for 2011, I was looking for something which I could say would end the year with a “bang”… and did so in a roundabout way! While seeking further information on yesterday’s entry, I stumbled across the Melancholy Romantic… perhaps the most intriguing Steampunk / Neo-Victorian website I have seen. With cross-functionality covering a wide variety of Steampunk issues of note (e.g. music, literature, conventions, and more), the Melancholy Romantic is painfully beautiful, so I do hearty recommend a visit to the locale! Received word earlier today of an excellent opportunity for budding (and experienced) Steampunk photographers, especially for those who wish to display their talents on a large canvas. Neo-Victorian, in conjunction with Koinup.com, is sponsoring a Steampunk photography contest, specifically…

The team behind NeoVictoria, the well-known Second Life® roleplaying simulation, is running a photo contest. Participants submit photos that represent the spirit of this amazing steampunk community and submit them to The NeoVictoria Project group on Koinup. [Koinup is a free social network based on user-generated content, with a focus on virtual worlds.]

today we feature a smorgasbord

We're a bit all over the place this week. There are truly steampunky happenings out there — a proposed web series you can support, for instance! And a new physics-based game in which you save a steampunk hero and dispose of a steampunk villain! — but there are other historical tidbits not necessarily Neo-Victorian. (That'd be a good name for a weblog. Not Necessarily Neo-Victorian.)

Baseball history, for example, is full of proposed innovations and inventions, some of which succeeded wildly and some of which…well…didn't. The schematics are fantastic, regardless of the success rate!

Enterprising souls have rebuilt Bletchley Park's Tunny cryptanalysis machine. Ooooh. Ahhhh.

We always hear that kids know nothing of history. Apparently we've been hearing that for a very long time! (The Breaking Time is a great site, by the way, and you should check it out.)

Steampunk has arrived at Fifth Avenue, in New York City!

As I was rummaging around the internet, I came across an intriguing photo series, which led me to a prognostication for the 2011. For those who are in the know regarding going-ons in New York City, it seems that the tradition of holiday window displays has reached out to the Steampunk genre. Bergdorf Goodman (website here, further store descriptions here), a high end shopping venue in the city, has chosen a Steampunk / Neo-Victorian theme for one of its stores this year. I must admit to not being too familiar with said holiday window displays traditions (and any associated implications – say new fashion lines associated with the display), but I do wonder if these display will introduce a larger contingent of individuals to Steampunk? That can be both good and bad, of course, but I admit to being surprised at learning of this development. Steampunk Locales on Facebook

As Facebook grows, more Steampunk locations seem to either have an extension of their main existence or exist exclusively on this social medium. This being the case, I felt that I would attempt to provide a listing of Steampunk locales (and links) of Steampunk places on Facebook. I made an attempt at locating as many locations as possible, as a simple search for “Steampunk” has a habit of leaving a good number of locations off its listing.

Now, before my website’s emails (or comments) are inundated with “Why isn’t my Steampunk endeavor on your list, damn you!”, please understand that this is quite literally a work in process. If you read the list, and do not see your group / store / LARP / drinking party (e.g. tea, coffee, Guinness, ect…) on the list (or if I’ve made a miscue on the address), simply send me an email at TheSteampunkTribune@yahoo.com, and I’ll be more than happy to update this small list!
