If you’re looking for more steampunk convention fun, fear not – Waltham, Massachusetts becomes an International Steampunk City this weekend. Many thanks to the Sparkle Queen for sending on this news! (One of these years I will attend. I will also meet the Sparkle Queen then and the world will explode for reasons too complicated to explain here, so really, it’s for your own good that I will not be there.)
The Steampunk Tribune webmaster continues his yeoman’s work of chronicling the many steampunk-related Facebook pages out there on the aetherweb.
A lengthy examination of personality types and steampunk archetypes yields some interesting results!

The virtual Steampunk City-State of New Babbage has had a number of off-world incarnations since its inception. From the original New Babbage Forums & New Babbage Cog, to the New Babbage Ning, and the current City of New Babbage homepage, many changes have taken place, but unfortunately, much has been lost of one of Second Life’s longest lasting Steamland sims (though not as long Caledon, to respond to those who were already thinking of sharpening their pencils regarding this)!
To try to address the loss of history that has taken place over the years, I’ve started up the New Babbage Register, to assist the formal New Babbage Department of Records and Archives in keeping New Babbage’s past intact. Its a bit of a Gibbon-esque endeavor, and though I’m no classic historian by any measure, hopefully it’ll add a bit of retrospective flavor to the entirety of New Babbage. From a lead from the lovely Miss Bookworm Heinreichs, I learned that a new New Babbage project is underway! Titled “Tales of New Babbage, The Steampunk City”, as Mr. A. Cleanslate describes the new endeavor…
The City of New Babbage is a consensual hallucination of a steampunk city in a time that never was. It’s built out of bits and prims in SecondLife (instead of bricks and plaster), but it’s as “real” a place as Paris or Mumbai. People from all over the world “go” there daily to build fantastic machines, fight krakens, and roleplay vast, open-ended storylines replete with mad scientists, street urchins and evil geniuses.
We also write stories. With a few exceptions, none of us are professional writers, and few write enough to generate complete works. But for all that, the stories are immensely entertaining and sometimes excellent. We’ve assembled pages and pages of them – and want to share them with the world.
