Steampunk Events for June 3rd to 5th, 2011

| June 3, 2011

The first event in this weekend’s listing is from the virtual worlds… but not Second Life!  This event is a brand new Steampunk build in InWorldz, sponsored by Red Pyramid, who will be displaying this innovative build, or as Mr. Nyx Breen stated in his press release…

“The Marvels of Yesterdays Future are here for today for your entertainment and exploration. Some of Inworldz most creative and innovative creators have joined together to build a unique sim based theme in the Victorian and Steampunk styles. The grand opening is this Friday evening (time will be announced) and the sim will remain open for your exploration for the next several weeks.”

The grand opening, which will take place on Friday evening, will be unique, being in InWorldz.  Though this platform has its growing pains, it does have one notable benefit compared to Second Life, in prim usage.  (Ed. note… for those not familiar with virtual worlds, a “prim” might be considered a “building block, akin to a malleable Lego”).  Whereas a Second Life sim might hold about 15,000 prims, an InWorldz sim holds about 45,000 – a substantial bit more!  So if one wishes to take a trip to InWorldz and see Red Pyramid’s new Steampunk build, to consider signing up (for free, of course), at: http://inworldz.com/

Back in the real world of Steampunk, a novel event will be taking place in Fort Worth, on the 4th of June… the Difference Engine event will have its debut!  A brain child of Mr. Ramon del Mar (ed. note – a frequent contributor to the Steampunk Tribune), the Difference Engine is a highly immersive Steampunk event in two parts – the first of which will be taking place this weekend… to do it justice, do pay a visit to the Difference Engine’s website, where one can learn its details, at: http://www.the-difference-engine.info/

Last but not least, Steampunk Chicago will have yet another of its amazing events!  The Polyphonic Panorama will be a night of Steampunk, Vaudeville, Pirates, and much more!  For more details, and enticing information of the talented performers, please do take a moment to travel to this link… http://steampunkchicago.com/events/polyphonic-panorama/

Steampunk Events: 29 April, 2011 to 1 May, 2011

| April 30, 2011

The Steampunk convention season is in full swing, with two major conventions taking place this weekend!  Starting with the Canadian National Steampunk Exhibition, which will host a star-studded field of Steampunk luminaries (including Mr. Mike Perschon (from the Steampunk Scholar), Professor Elemental, and Miss Jaymee Goh (writer and blogger), to name but a few), fantastic events (a plethora of lectures, gadgets galore, ladies Steampunk fashions, and (one I will to my dismay) an “Extraordinary Gin Tasting”), plenty of Steampunk Gadgets, Music, Literature, and so much  more!  If one has somehow missed the proverbial boat on the Canadian National Steampunk Exhibition, by all means to endeavor to attend, if at all possible!  For more details, a schedule of events, and up-to-the-moment news, please do visit their website, at: http://www.cnse.ca/
If one’s plans precludes a trip north of the 48th parallel, fear not!  Aetherfest will be in full swing in beautiful San Antonio this weekend!  With special guests, stupendous music, and visits from the Airship Isabella and Miss Addisyn Madd and the Landship Dead Betty, there is certain to be plenty of Steamy goodness deep in the heart of Texas!  For more information, please visit the Aetherfest’s website, at: http://aetherfest.tumblr.com/

Steampunk Events: 15th – 17th of April, 2011

| April 15, 2011

This week is replete with Steampunk events, starting with the Oklahoma Steampunk Exposition!  The OK Steampunk Expo is three days of concentrated Steampunk, and to reiterate their press release….

On April 15 – 17, Oklahoma’s Clarion Hotel at 6200 N. Robinson will be the stage for an alternate reality. For this brief weekend, step into a world where pirates fly airships, doctors hawk potions from a stage, swordswallowers compete with fireswallowers, men display award-winning facial hair, and Tea is verb.

It’s the Oklahoma Steampunk Exposition, a convention dedicated to furthering the innovation, creativity, and joy that is steampunk.

What’s steampunk? Steampunk is the hottest new trend, based in the Victorian concept of what the future will be. It touches on art, science, technology, fashion, music, literature, film, television, and gaming. This neo-vintage movement has developed a life of its own, sending tentacles into all aspects of life.

The Oklahoma Steampunk Exposition will showcase yesteryear’s tomorrow with such performances as Bizzaro, the Optical Illusionist, Knotty Bits Sideshow, The Airship Isabella, the Pickled Punk Sideshow, and more. Such well known steampunk authors as Cherie Priest, Brian Young, James Taylor will be there among others. And musicians love steampunk –  Unwoman, and Psyche Corporation will rock the stages.

Steampunk and gaming are a match of epic proportions, and there will be gaming with Magic: the Gathering, Iron Kingdom, Space 1889, and the new LARP: Steampunk Europa.
And to satisfy the craving to own these wondrous contraptions, gizmos, and fashions, there will be a market full of handmade jewelry, clothing, trinkets, and gadgets galore.

If you are able to attend, do make it a point of making time to visit the Oklahoma Steampunk Expo this weekend!  For more information, please turn to: http://www.oklahomasteampunkexpo.com/
Next, on Saturday the 16th, New Babbage’s Piermont Landing presents the Grimm Ball and Dark Fairy Tale Contest!  Under the view of classic fairy tales, the Grimm Ball is homage to the classic tales of the Brother Grimm, whose stories are an essential part of western culture, and most certainly paints a wide spread over the Steampunk genre!  For more details, please visit Miss Carver’s blog, Virtually Classic Fashions, at: http://seabreezegal.blogspot.com/2011/04/what-if-every-fairy-tale-was-real.html
Finally, this Sunday the 17th,  is the opening of our “Steampunk Art Festival”. On Ataria next to Kafe Kruemelkram we present scupltures, objects, vuildings and machines designed by some of the best SL artists and builders like Bryn Oh, Sextan Shepherd, Glyph Graves, Fuschia Nightfire, Canello Capallini, Jenne Dibou, Daalinii Rae and many more plus Jordan Reyne Deezul live in concert. All this on sunday, april 17, 12 PM PDT (21.00 MET).
To visit, please follow this path!…http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ataria/45/208/63/

Steampunk Events, March 18th through 20th, 2011

| March 18, 2011

The big event in the RL Steamlands is ALL-CON, in Dallas, TX, starting today (in fact, they are already an hour or so into the gathering), and running until Sunday.  Though it isn’t a dedicated Steampunk event, it does appear to have Steampunk elements to it, so if you happen to be in the Dallas-Ft Worth area, do make it a point of visiting!  For more information, please visit: http://www.all-con.net/

Although San Francisco is best known for its Victorian homes, the beautiful town of Port Townsend in Washington state has an amazing collection of classic Victorian home, comprising both renovated and original structures.  After a year long absence, the Port Townsend Victorian Festival has returned (so I’m told)!  This being said, I’ve been unsuccesful in locating a working url for further information regarding the event, but even so, one dosen’t need a website to hop in the car and visit the stunning structures (such as the Ann Starrett Mansion, picured above), so if one wishes to simply pay a visit, I would recommend a quick visit to some of the below locations for a hidden gem of Victorian architecture…

The original Port Townsend Victorian Festival link (perhaps it’ll return…) - www.victorianfestival.org
PT Guide - http://www.ptguide.com/
Port Townsend History - http://www.ptguide.com/history-a-attractions
Port Townsend’s Wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Townsend,_Washington
… and a bit on the Ann Starrett Mansion (well done, and well worth the visit!) - http://starrettmansion.com/

Steampunk Events for November 19th -21st, 2010…

| November 19, 2010

This is the week many have been waiting for in RL (and in SL), the second Steamcon, in the brisk city of Seattle, Washington State.  It looks to be a very good event, with an excellent turnout expected and a large number of unique events taking place.  Aside from a long list of luminaries visiting (including Mr. Jake Von Slatt, Mr. James Blaylock, Ms. Cheri Priest, and Mr. Phil &Ms. Kaja Foglio, to point out a few of the many guests), a list of items taking place did catch my eye, including…

  • Two of my favorite Steampunk musical performers, Miss Unwoman and Miss Veronique Chevalier
  • Numerous new games, including a new SPACE 1889 RPG scenario titled “Red Sands”
  • An outstanding art exhibition (including another personal favorite of mine, Mr. James Ng
  • and frankly, a plethora of outstanding things to do!

For a much more in depth review, or details while you are visiting SteamCon II, please visit their website, at: http://www.steamcon.org/index.php

If one is unable to attend the real world Steam event, then SL provides an excellent alternative!  The culmination of the Steamland’s Fleet Week reaches a crescendo with a series of events, including the Windjammer Race, the ever-popular Submarine Races, and of course, the second Annual Formal Uniform Dress Ball, held at the Piermont Landing.  To eye an extended course of events of the completion of Fleet Week, please visit New Babbage’s website, at: http://cityofnewbabbage.com/reader/node/1052
