Flaming Zeppelins: The Adventures of Ned the Seal by Joe R. Lansdale (Advance Reader Copy)
Flaming Zeppelins is actually a compilation of two earlier works by Joe R. Lansdale, Zeppelins West (2001) and Flaming London (2005), both of which chronicle the adventures of Ned the Seal. Ned was an ordinary seal until a mad doctor on an island modified his flippers and brain, giving him the ability to write and read pulp novels. Ned is one of the most normal characters in Flaming Zeppelins, which may give the reader an idea of what he/she is in for…
Lansdale, who also brought the world Bubba-Ho-Tep, mashes together Victorian writers, Wild West heroes, gadgets of all kinds, and a lot of scatological humor to bring Flaming Zeppelins to life. Annie Oakley, Sitting Bull, Dr. Moreau, Captain Nemo, Jules Verne, Mark Twain, H.G. Wells, the Frankenstein monster, the Tin Man, Dracula, and so many more characters from literature race about in zeppelins and hot air balloons and submersible machines in a series of ridiculous madcap adventures that may all be due to Wells's time machine machinations. It's a bit like a teenage boy's fever dream, with pathos on one page and the discussions of grafting horse penises on another. Readers looking for a rollicking romp through the late nineteenth century as narrated by a seal couldn't ask for a better offering!
We have an advance reader copy of Flaming Zeppelins to give away! To be entered in the drawing, post a comment below and tell us which two literary characters you'd most like to see on a date/in a relationship/in bed together (trust me, this book makes you wonder about these sorts of things). Deadline for entries is Friday, December 17. Good luck!
